Lightweight Women's Double Sculls (LW2x) - Final

The first to show by a little were Grobler and McCann but margins were tight and coming through the middle of the race New Zealand’s Julia Edward and Sophie MacKenzie had moved out in front. Edward spent the season in the lightweight single and she comes together at this regatta with under-23 World Champion, MacKenzie.

Coming through to the final sprint Edward and MacKenzie held the edge over South Africa with now Obee and Jennerich moving into third. The leaders must have known about the sprint possibilities of the Canadians and they were giving it their all. Rating 36 to Canada’s 38, the New Zealanders stayed in front setting a new World Best Time – breaking the time set earlier today in the B-final by Great Britain. Jennerich and Obee took silver and China’s Wenyi Huang and Dandan Pan did the sprint of their lives to take bronze.

Gold – EDWARD, Julia (NZL)
I actually couldn’t believe it crossing the line. This is my first world champ title, it’s been a dream.

Silver – JENNERICH, Lindsey (CAN)
It was our best race. Great start, then awesome rhythm if we get on that we fly.

Bronze – HUANG, Wenyi (CHN)
It’s a brand new combination, as one of us was in a single at the world cup.

B-final

A bad race in the semifinals which included a crab near the finish put winners of the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Katherine Copeland and Imogen Walsh of Great Britain into the B-final. They made the best of it and after overtaking Poland going through the middle of the race, they crossed the line in first. The faces of Copeland and Walsh showed this race to be bittersweet for the duo who had set a new World Best Time for their effort.
