Nemanja Nesic 1988 – 2012
Nesic, 24 years of age and a member of the Smederevo Rowing Club, was training in the lightweight men’s double sculls in preparation for the 2012 Samsung World Rowing Cup III in Munich when he suddenly collapsed.
He was a member of the Serbian Rowing Team for eight years, won two bronze medals at the 2009 and 2011 European Rowing Championships in the lightweight men’s four, and represented Serbia in the same boat class at the 2012 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta two weeks ago in Lucerne, Switzerland. Nesic made his international debut in 2005 and has represented his country at junior, under-23 and senior level.
As an elite Serbian athlete training with the support of the Sport Department of the Republic of Serbia, Nesic was regularly tested in the Institute of Sport and there were no indications of underlying health problems.
Nebojsa, Jevremovic, Secretary General of the Serbian Rowing Federation, stated: “the sudden death of Nemanja Nesic is a terrible loss for his family, friends and fellow rowers as well as for Serbian rowing because he had amazing potential for growth in the sport.”
