The FISA World Masters Regatta held in Montreal, Canada last September has received the 29th Gala Sports-Quebec “Maurice” award for international event of the year.

The rowing event was up against two other strong finalists – the Canadian Tennis Masters and the Women’s International Cycling Grand Prix.

“This is really a wonderful promotion for the sport of rowing” said Organising Committee president Guylaine Bernier “and yes, we beat the Tennis which is such a prestigious event!”.

The 28th FISA Masters Regatta is said to have been the most impressive sporting event held in Montreal in 2001. Held over four days, the regatta welcomed over 3,100 athletes, as well as families, accompanying personnel and supporters from 35 countries. Needless to say, the success of such a large-scale event represents quite an organisational and technical challenge. The organising committee, assisted by over 300 volunteers, and the sponsors of the event pulled it off beautifully.

The “Maurice” honours the late Maurice Richard, the well-known Canadian ice hockey player. These awards were presented last weekend during a dynamic televised event held in Montreal.

Mrs Bernier, who is also a FISA Commission member, was present to accept the award.

The next FISA Masters Regatta takes place from September 5 to 8 in Racice, Czech Republic.
