2010 Rowing World Champs secures chief
With the 2008 Olympics bearing down on the rowing world it may feel like 2010 is a distant thought on the horizon, but not for the organisers of the 2010 World Rowing Championships.
Lake Karapiro, New Zealand, venue for the 2010 World Rowing Championships have just selected the chief executive officer to run K2010 Limited, the company that will organise the 2010 World Rowing Championships.
Thomas Maya is the new chief executive officer. Mayo has previously worked for Triathlon New Zealand which included organising the ITU World Cup. He comes from a sporting background in middle distance running and competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games for Great Britain.
Rowing New Zealand’s press release reported K2010 chairman, Bill Falconer as saying, “while the organising committee for the World Championships included the experience required for a successful regatta, Thomas’ mandate is to ensure that the championships will also be a splendid event for athletes and their supporters, sponsors, the media, spectators and a worldwide television audience.”
Mayo commented, “Rowing is enjoying a successful period in the limelight in New Zealand thanks to the success of the national athletes on the world stage. The 2010 World Championships will be an amazing experience for a general public enthusiastic about the sport, and a stunning event for the top athletes who will come here. To ensure we meet both levels of expectation is a major challenge and one I am looking forward to delivering over the next two years.”
Mayo’s role begins 19 may 2008.
