The South East Asian Games are the biggest sporting event held in the region, involving over 5’000 athletes from 11 countries who compete in 32 different sports.
Over 70 rowers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam raced in a total of eight events from 4 to 7 December. The finals were held on West Lake in Hanoi over the weekend.
Indonesia led the overall medal table with a total of 4 golds and 1 silver medal but its traditional dominance of South East Asian rowing was strongly challenged by host country Vietnam who ranked second with 3 golds, 1 silver and 3 bronzes. Thailand came in third with 1 gold, 2 silvers and 1 bronze.
Hosting the Games for the first time, Vietnam has invested over 20 million USD in 12 different sports facilities – including a new 1 million USD rowing and canoeing centre and the purchase of 30 racing boats.
The next S.E.A. Games will be held in the Philippines in 2005.
