A fine weekend for Brazil
Racing in the city, Sao Paulo

Brazil dominated the South American Rowing Championships last weekend when they won 12 of the 17 events on their home turf of Sao Paulo against solid competition from 11 other nations. This placed Brazil in a fine position as they look towards the Pan American Games again on home soil of Rio de Janeiro in 2007.
One of the closest battles went on in the men’s four between Brazil and Chile with Brazil managing to stay just enough ahead to finish one second over Chile’s four which included Miguel Cerda who holds the current World Best time in the lightweight pair.
But sitting in Brazil’s four, Allan Bittencourt and Alexandre Altair finished up as regatta stars after securing a total of three gold medals. Bittencourt and Altair completed a clean sweep of the sweep events by winning the pair and eight as well.
This left Cerda and team mate Felipe Leal with silver in the pair and bronze in the eight.
Cerda’s team mate from 2002 when he set the World Best Time, Christian Yantani, joined Cerda in the eight and also swapped to sculling finishing second in the lightweight double with Marco Cantaneda.
Brazil’s two-time Olympian in the men’s single, Anderson Nocetti also helped his country to three gold medals finishing first in the eight, quad and double.
Two-time Olympic single sculler Soraya Jadue of Chile joined Maria Orellana in the women’s double but could only manage silver behind Argentina’s Gabriela Best and Veronica Quagliarello. Best, who competed internationally as a junior in 2000 and 2001, also won the women’s single. She finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of nearest rival Mariana Cadore of Brazil.
The biggest field of nine entries lined up in the lightweight men’s single with Ronaldo Vargas of Brazil easily winning over Victor Aspillaga of Peru. Vargas also took gold in the second biggest event – the lightweight men’s double.
The championships were held on the Raia OlÃmpica course in the University of Sao Pablo campus.
