Argentina strong at South American Champs
Argentina recently played host to the South American Rowing Championships and at the end of racing showed their dominance by being the top medalling country.
The venue for the championships was just outside of the city of Buenos Aires at Tigre with the National Tennis and Rowing Club of Tigre playing host. The event attracted eight countries including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela as well as Argentina. Although considered outside of the South American area, El Salvador and Guatemala also participated.
The 180 rowers competed on the 2000m regatta course and great potential was shown in the junior races, especially the junior men’s eight. This was ultimately won by Argentina’s team of Juan Pizorno, Juan Afonso, Remo Lanzoni, Agustín Molina, Jerónimo Basombrio, Agustín Jovenich, Gonzalo Buzo, Ivo Perpina; timonel Eugenia Christello in a time of 5:43.9.
The lightweight men’s single, won by Brazil’s Ailson Da Silva, also generated much attention. Silva was this year’s silver medallist at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships and then he went on to race in the final of the lightweight single at the World Rowing Championships.
Conditions on the water were fair for the three days of racing.
The World Rowing team values feedback.
