The IOC has confirmed that the athlete quota and the programme of events in the Olympic Rowing competition in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games (550 athletes in 14 events) will be maintained for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Programme for Athens 2004 was established during the IOC Executive Board meeting, held 18-20 September 2001 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Faced with an increasing number of athletes and events over recent Olympic Games, with 10,960 accredited athletes in 300 events in Sydney 2000, the following elements were identified as the key priorities in determining the 2004 Programme:
-establishing the total number of athletes
-maintaining the current number of events
-establishing athletes quotas in each sport
-increasing female participation within identified frameworks.

In order to stay within a maximum number of 10,500 athletes, it was necessary to strictly control the athlete quotas in all sports, and in fact make quota reductions in several sports. 28 sports make up the summer Games Programme.

For the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, the IOC has confirmed that there will be a total number of approximately 10,500 athletes, and the number of events, approximately 300, will be maintained.

The FISA Council is now analysing the Sydney Olympic Qualification System for rowing and is preparing one for Athens. Any suggestions are welcome at info@fisa.org.
