The Australian Under 23 team will race today at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Amsterdam wearing black armbands in honour of former Australian Olympic rower, Amy Gillett.

Gillett (nee Safe) was killed in a cycling accident on Monday while training in Germany. Twenty-nine year old Gillett changed from rowing to competitive cycling five years ago and was training with her six member Australian Institute of Sport road cycling team when they were hit by a car.

Three of Gillett’s team mates remain in a critical condition in a German hospital.

In a memorial service held in the small German town of Zeulendroda, 1,000 people paid tribute to Gillett. Gillett’s husband, Simon, a former dual rowing World Champion and former national team coach, flew out to be part of the service.
