Lightweight Women’s Single (LW1x)
Heat 1
The first heat of the women’s lightweight single the German, Matilde Pauls took an early lead striking at an efficient 33 strokes per minute with the rest of racing to capture the other of the two automatic births in Friday’s Semi-final. At 1,000m the Chinese sculler, Shimin Yan, racketed up the pressure, followed closely on Michaela Taupe of Austria. The Chinese sculler pushed through the German leader in the third 500 to capture lead with both women rowing comfortably towards the Semi-final in that order.
Heat 2
With the lead changing hands throughout the race between Daniela Nachazelova from the Czech Republic, Ismaray Marrero Aria of Cuba, and Naomi Hoogester of Great Britain. In a sprint which brought the early morning crowd to its feet Hoogester, in her first international race, took a narrow victory over the Czech sculler, both of whom advance to Friday’s Semi-final.
Heat 3
The Swiss sculler Lea Fluri took a commanding lead by 500m and won comfortably over Sinead Jennings of Ireland, who was looking to avenge her narrow defeat at the 2004 World Rowing Championships, both scullers pressed ahead of the field and qualified comfortably.
Heat 4
At 500m the lead was held by Antonia van Deventer of Great Britain, but she gradually fell back as the Spanish sculler, Teresa Mas De Xaxars Rivero, and then the fourth representative of Great Britain in this event, Jennifer Goldsack, both challenged her. At half-way Van Deventer still held second, but lost out to a strong surge in the last 500m from Goldsack who qualified for the Semi-final along with the Spanish sculler at the head of the field.
Lightweight Men’s Single (LM1x)
Heat 1
In the first heat, with the tailwind increasing slightly, the Zac Purchase of Great Britain blasted out to a half-length lead over Gerard van der Linden of the Netherlands at the 500m marker. The two scullers enjoyed a close race all the way to the line with Zac Purchase winning by one length over the technically proficient Dutch sculler, both rowers advancing to the semifinals.
Heat 2
The second heat of the lightweight men’s single scull was a comfortable affair for the Danish second single sculler, Rasmus Quist and the Japanese scullers Kazushige Ura. Both athletes qualified easily over the rest of the field, with Quist taking the top spot.
Heat 3
In the final heat, it was another easy affair for Denmark’s third representative Mads Rasmussen, and Great Britain’s Tim Male. Rasmussen won easily, while Male virtually drifted over the last 250m with the rest of the field a long distance back, conserving their energy for the Repechages.
