The World Rowing Forum has attracted some very prestigious speakers who will share their international experience and knowledge from November 14 to 16, 2002 in Milan Italy.

Dr Bengt Saltin M.D, international specialist in exercise physiology from Sweden is one of these top scientists.

The former competitive runner has devoted over fourty years to the study of muscle biology and will present his latest findings during the coaches programme in an hour and a half session on Friday November 15.

Earlier this year Saltin was recognized for his significant contribution in the field of exercise physiology and received the IOC 2002 Olympic Prize for Sport Sciences presented by the IOC Medical Commission making him the fourth person to have ever been awarded this outstanding distinction.

The impact of Saltin’s work has been described in recent IOC press releases as having been felt throughout society. His research in the 60’s, studying the effects of inactivity and commissioned in part by NASA, confirmed that exercise should be part of the recovery process after illness or injury. This revolutionary breakthrough changed the way patients have been treated ever since.

Saltin has held several high profile positions in the world of sports. He was board member of the Swedish Orienteering Federation, and later became Vice President of the International Orienteering Federation for eight years. He was chief editor of the Scandinavian Journal of medicine and science in sports and became the first president of the European College of Sport Science.

He was also Chairman of the Board, responsible for Sports Sciences and Physical Education at the University of Copenhagen from 1988 to 1990, and Executive Secretary to the centre for Sport Research and the sport research council in Stockholm, Sweden until 1993.

The presence of such eminent speakers is one of the strong points of this new World Rowing event. The World Rowing Forum aims to bring together coaches, sports doctors, regatta organisers and sports or federation managers and give them the opportunity to benefit from each other’s expertise and experience.

All four groups will be driven by an expert in each field and will come together under a common theme “Looking for Breakthroughs”.
