2001 women’s double World Champion Kathrin Boron of Germany is expecting a baby in July. The three time Olympic gold medallist and eight time world champion is taking a break from rowing during her pregnancy and will not be defending her World Championships title in Seville in September.

“I am very happy and looking forward to my first child” says Boron. The father of the baby is successful fellow German oarsman Sven Ueck.

But Boron has no plans to abandon rowing altogether “In 2003 I want to attack again and in 2004 I will try to win my fourth Olympic gold” said the 32-year old sculler.

And she will have full support from her coaches, doctors and National rowing federation for her post-pregnancy comeback.

With coach Jutta Lau the two have even developed a training programme for Boron to follow during her pregnancy “Without it I would miss the joy of rowing very much.”

“We expect and welcome her back in 2003 “ said the German rowing federation of their star.
