The Canadians will send a large contingent of 11 crews to the World Championships next month in Spain.
The team of 34 athletes go to the World Champs having raced internationally once this season. The men’s squad and the lightweights competed at the second World Cup in Lucerne and took away a gold in the lightweight men’s four and bronze in the men’s eight. The women’s squad competed at the third World Cup in Munich winning bronze in the women’s pair and coming fourth in the women’s eight.
Retirements following the 2000 Olympic Games means that Canada has been rebuilding its core of athletes. At last year’s World Championships the only medal was a bronze in the women’s pair. Canadian Head Coach, Brian Richardson, hopes to improve on this performance. ?I am very excited about the speed at which our crews are developing,? he said.
The team will continue training in Canada before they head to Banyoles, Spain at the end of the month for their final preparation.
