Canada Selects Their Top Rowers

This year saw a record number of entries for the Canadian National Rowing Team Trials that concluded on Sunday. Over 100 athletes from across Canada traveled to Elk Lake in Victoria to race for a coveted position on the squad.

These trials for heavyweight men, lightweight men and lightweight women, were the first in a series of steps to decide the Canadian National Team that will compete at selected World Cup regattas and the FISA World Rowing Championships in September. The selection is based around showing boat-moving skills in small boats ? pairs for sweep rowers and singles for scullers.  About 70 heavyweight women will race next weekend in London, Ontario.

Some outstanding results were recorded with Fiona Milne, back from training in Australia, dominating the lightweight single, while Jeff Powell and Adam Kreek won in a close pairs race. Olympic veteran Gavin Hassett and partner won the lightweight men’s pair and the men’s single had David Marchioro in first place. Matt McCarthy cornered the lightweight men’s single in a fast time of 6.52 over the 2000 metre course.

Canada’s National Team coach, Brian Richardson, said, ?the athletes showed a significant improvement in standard over last year, and there’s more depth in each class.?
