Canada's Heavyweight Women Trial
Canada starts to prepare for the next Olympic Games

Canada’s top heavyweight women raced over the weekend for a spot in the national team selection camp. Seventy rowers competed in pairs or singles with the composition of larger boats to be decided later.
Jacqui Cook and Karen Clark, bronze medallists at last years World Championships re-established their top position, winning the pair ahead of Pauline Van Roessel and Roslyn McLeod. Buffy Williams (formerly Alexander), part of the bronze-medal-winning eight in Sydney, won the singles event. She finished ahead of Kubet Weston; a former world medallist in the Canadian women’s eight.
Sydney Olympian, Kristen Wall, who rowed the single when Olympic gold medallist, Marnie McBean withdrew, finished in fourth place. Jane Rumball finished in third.
These races determined the selection camp invitees who will then trial for specific national team boats. The final selection, to be decided next week, will determine who will compete at the Zurich Rowing World Cup Regatta in Munich this August and then the World Championships in Spain in September.
The selected Under 23 team will head to Italy this summer for the U23 World Championships and the final selected group will race at 2002 Commonwealth and World University regattas held in England.
