Germany has taken the inaugural Team Trophy at the FISA World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland but only after a last-minute medal secured it.

Italy had been leading the points trophy as the competition drew to a close, with 67 points after a two gold, three silver and three bronze medal performance.

But in the final race of the day, the men's eight, Germany took bronze and the five points that went with it to overtake Italy and win the trophy by three points.

Points for the trophy are awarded on the same basis as they are in the Zurich Rowing World Cup regattas – eight points for gold, six for silver, five for bronze, four for fourth, three for fifth, two for sixth and one for winning a B final.

Great Britain was third with 60 points while USA's consistent overall performance earned it the fourth place with 53.

Romania was fifth (43 points), France sixth (41), Australia seventh (40), Netherlands eighth (35), Ireland ninth (24) and Belarus tenth (21).

Germany's five golds, one silver and two bronzes provided a considerable boost to their tally. It also put them at the top of the medal table.

Great Britain was second with four golds and one bronze while Australia and Ireland shared third spot with three golds each.

Italy's medal haul put it in fifth, with France and Romania each taking two golds, one silver and two bronzes to finish sixth equal. Hungary, Norway and Austria rounded out the top of the table with one gold each.
