Crowds watching the E.ON Hanse Canal Cup 2005                 Northern Germany comes alive today with the opening of the sixth edition of the E.ON Hanse Canal Cup. Dubbed the longest and hardest rowing race in the world the race will be live on television.

Five international elite men's eights from Germany (2006 World Champions), the United States (2004 Olympic Champions), Great Britain (2006 fifth place at the World Rowing Championships), the Netherlands and Cambridge University Boat Club (Great Britain) will be competing in Rendsburg, Germany on the busiest artificial waterway in the world, the Kiel Canal.

Competition begins today with ergometer racing and continues on Saturday 7 October with sprint racing. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday with the main race, the 12.7km E.ON Hanse Cup.

Organisers expect 150 000 spectators and for those who can’t be there NDR German television will be broadcasting live over the race weekend. NDR is available on SES-Astra Satellite 19.2 east (11,582 GHz. hor.).
