Extending rowing in Tunisia
Tunisia has increased its rowing profile with the completion of the third Tunis International Rowing Regatta. Last weekend on the North Lake of Tunis, with the capital city as a backdrop, rowers from ten nations enjoyed temperate weather for the two days of racing.
Day one was a 500m sprint with Tunisia winning the majority of events. Tunisia also led the field on day two over the 2000m distance.
Star rower for Tunisia, Ibtissem Trimech, won every event she entered including the lightweight women’s single and women’s double. This is part of Trimech’s preparation for the Beijing Olympics where she has qualified to compete in the women’s single.
Organiser Faycal Soula said the quality of rowers had stepped up this year although there were less countries attending than expected. Soula was impressed by the local media interest with coverage of the racing appearing on four local television stations.
Included in the programme this year were kayaking events that made use of the same umpires and six-lane rowing course. The uniting of the two disciplines received praise from both sports.
