Press Release: International Rowing
For immediate release:

Yesterday, 28 European National Rowing Federations assembled in Munich at the invitation of the International Rowing Federation (FISA) and voted to re-establish the European Rowing Championships. The vote count was 24 in favour and 4 against. The last European Rowing Championships took place in 1973 and were open to all countries. These championships will be open only to European National Rowing Federations that are in countries recognised as Europe according to the Association of European National Olympic Committees.

These new championships will start again in 2007, at the end of September, and will feature the 14 Olympic boat classes racing over 2’000 metres. The federations also voted 21 for and 6 against to create the European Rowing Management Board that will govern these Championships and other European matters. The new European Management Board now consists of three members voted democratically by the European national federations themselves and three European members of the FISA Council appointed by FISA. The three members elected to a provisional one year term by the national federations are Ryszard Stadniuk, President of the Polish Rowing Association, Dag Danzglock, Events Chair of the German Rowing Association, and Nebojsa Jevremovic, Secretary General of the Serbia and Montenegro Rowing Association. FISA has appointed honorary Events Commission Chairman Mike Sweeney of Great Britain as the Chair of the Management Board for this one year period. The other two FISA appointments will be named shortly after its next Council meeting.

Bids will now be sought from European National Rowing Federations interested in hosting the 2007 and 2008 European Rowing Championships. The organising federations for these two championships will be attributed by the 2006 Annual Meeting of the European Rowing Federations which will take place on 28 August 2006 at the World Rowing Championships in Eton, Great Britain.
