Germany Takes Overall 2002 Zurich Rowing World Cup Title
With a total of 209 points Germany has once again claimed the overall Zurich Rowing World Cup title. For the sixth consecutive year the German rowers earned the most points at the three regattas that made up the 2002 World Cup series.
Great Britain placed second overall with a total of 103 points and Italy, who participated in only two of the three regattas, sits in third place on the points table with 74 points. The Czech Republic and Australia complete the top five placing nations.
First places in six of the fourteen Olympic boat classes at the last of the three regattas raced on home turf in Munich, Germany (August 1 – 3) helped Germany secure the lead that they had held throughout the series.
The 2002 glass Rowing World Cup was presented to German rowing federation president Helmut Griep by FISA president Denis Oswald at the end of racing on Saturday.
Points were awarded to crews that place in the top seven of each Olympic boat class. Eight points are awarded for first place, six points for second place, five points for third place and so on. The national federation with the most points after the three regattas is declared the winner of the overall Zurich Rowing World Cup.
The 2002 regattas were held in Hazewinkel, Belgium (June 14 – 16), Lucerne, Switzerland (July 12 – 14) and Munich, Germany (August 1 – 3).
