Going coastal this October
There is just one week to go until entries close for this year’s World Rowing Coastal Championships. Hosted by San Remo in Italy, the coastal racing will begin on 17 October and run for three days.
San Remo, a tourist destination near Genova, is no stranger to coastal rowing events. Last year they hosted the Italian Coastal Rowing Championships and the local club, Canottieri Sanremo, is very much involved in coastal rowing.
It is the second year that FISA’s coastal rowing regatta has been raced as a championship event indicating the ever-growing nature of the sport. The course, which follows the beach to encourage spectator viewing, includes three exciting buoy turns with the total distance adding up to 8000m.
In a feature unique to the coastal rowing championships, only club crews can participate and boats will be loaned to rowers who come from outside of Italy. Organiser Renato Alberti says that 45 boats have been made available to these participants.
So far there has been registration from Sweden, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, the United States and Cyprus. Still to enter, the biggest number of entries are likely to come from France and Italy. France is one of the largest coastal rowing nations and last year, Mandelieu, France, hosted the first ever World Rowing Coastal Championships attracting 55 different French clubs.
As a warm up to the World Rowing Coastal Championships, the week prior to the event the San Remo course will be used for the Italian Coastal Rowing Championships.
Press officer Marco Callai commented, “Italy is developing coastal rowing because it’s the best way to take rowing to people who know nothing about our sport.”
The World Rowing team values feedback.
