Denis Oswald, FISA’s president since 1989 has been recognised as the 4th most influential personality for the Olympic year ahead in the “Around The Rings” Golden 25 for 2004. A member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board, he has been overseeing Athens’ preparations since he took over as the IOC’s chairman of the Olympic coordination commission in 2001.

FISA’s president a lawyer from Neuchatel, Switzerland, manages to juggle his various IOC and FISA commitments with running his law practice. He is also president of ASOIF (Association of Summer Olympic International Federations), a Judge at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a legal consultant, Director of the International Centre for Sports Studies and a Lecturer at Neuchatel University.

An accomplished athlete, Oswald was a member of the Swiss National Rowing team from 1968-1976. He was 13 times national champion in elite competition including 5 times in single sculls. His Olympic career began when he won a bronze medal in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He also participated in the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympic Games and was fourth in the 1974 World Rowing Championships.
