Haifa men’s eight

On the Kishon River in northern Israel rowers have been keeping the oldest rowing club in the country alive since refugees from Germany first introduced the sport in 1935.

But it has not been an easy passage for the Haifa Rowing Club. Since 1935 the club has had to move twice and its current location in the Kishon Harbour is under threat from the Port Authorities. The Authorities say that an increase in shipping activity and the need for expansion means that the rowing club’s land is needed.

The club has been offered an alternative piece of land on the banks of the Kishon River and as the existing boathouse and pontoons cannot be moved to the new location the club is looking to raise funds for a new boathouse.

There are about 80 members of all ages and members use both racing and sea-going boats and current club financing is based on members’ fees. These funds are not enough to cover the construction of a new club and the Port Authority refuses to compensate the club for the property they will have to abandon.

The club is seeking financial support from every possible source. Any contribution to their plea will be greatly appreciated. If you are able to help please contact Giyora Saar, gsaar@netvision.net.il
