Behind every rower is a whole lot of equipment and this year’s World Rowing Youth Coaches Conference is making rowing equipment its focus.

The conference, taking place from 15 to 18 October, is hosted by Naples, Italy, with the title of the conference being materials, boats and technologies of modern rowing.

The programme is over four days with workshops and presentations covering everything from the specifics of boat repair to the effect of athletes’ weight and the weight of boats in their influence on performance. There will also be a comparison of riggers and broader topics like rowing biomechanics.

“I believe the conference is a unique occasion to be able to find all of the answers related to technology,” says event organiser Antonio Colamonici.

Italian boat builders Filippi are supplying some of the main presenters, and of special note is a workshop entirely dedicated to boat repair which Colamonici is especially enthusiastic about. “Participants will learn about the techniques and materials necessary to allow for the best and quickest boat repairs,” says Colamonici.

Italy’s top active female rower, Gabriella Bascelli, will speak from an athlete’s perspective about the use of technology.

FISA youth commission member Axel Mueller is expecting between 60 to 80 coaches from about 20 countries. Mueller also promises to squeeze in some sightseeing for the participants during the conference.
