Athletes from Japan erging to gold

With a full entry of two competitors in each event, Japan walked away with a total of 13 of the 30 medals up for grabs at the 4th Asian Machine Rowing Championships that concluded March 2 in Gifu, Japan.

The seven athletes from Kazakhstan, led by an enthusiastic Anna Belogonova, reaped three gold medals, two silvers and one bronze to place second on the medal table. Close behind was Hong Kong China, who had also produced a full entry, with one gold, two silver and two bronze.

Also worth a mention is the team from Pakistan that achieved the highest athlete-medal ratio. The one rower that participated in the competition in the men’s single walked away with the gold medal.

A total of 57 athletes from eight Asian countries participated in the 10 events that were disputed at the championships. The men’s single and the pair, a women’s single and a pair as well as a mixed four event were offered in both the open weight and the lightweight categories.

The successful event, which also offered a rowing seminar to the participants, was held at the rowing course that will host the FISA World Rowing Championships in 2005.
