Karsten Considers Quadruple Sculls for Worlds
Two-time Olympic single sculls champion Ekaterina Karsten is considering rowing in the quadruple sculls for the FISA World Rowing Championships in Lucerne in August.
The 29-year-old rowed in the both the single and double at the final Zurich Rowing World Cup regatta but said she found it very tiring and was not so sure it would work at the World Championships.
“In the double it will be hard,”she said. “Maybe I will try the quad. I will definitely be in the single.”
Races are divided into two groups at the World Championships, with each group racing on alternate days.
The women’s single and double are both in Group A, but the women’s quad is in Group B.
That means Karsten could row in the single and the quad without having to row twice in one day.
She would undoubtedly be a boost to any crew. In the women’s double, she and partner Olga Berazniova provided a serious challenge to the German crew of Olympic champion Katrin Boron and Olympic quad champion Kerstin Kowalski.
Despite not having trained together in the double, Karsten and Berazniova took the silver medal behind Germany just 50 minutes after Karsten had won the women’s single.
The entry deadline for the World Championships is August 4, with the competition running from August 18-24.
