MAD attempt erg marathon record
Great Britain’s MAD indoor rowing club – the club solely for indoor rowers – is taking on another challenge next week. On 16 April in Portsmouth, England the MAD team will attempt to break four British indoor rowing records all in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Going after the record in the men’s, women’s and mixed relays, teams of four will take it in turn to row the 42,195-metre distance.
Organiser Jon Goodall admits it won’t be easy. “The catch with these relays is that each person must row at least 2,000 metres per go. We can’t change over every 100 metres or so like we did in the 100,000 metres record last year,” says Goodall. “The aim is to try and take 5 to 10 minutes off each record – hopefully.”
The current record stands at 2 hours 24 minutes for the men’s relay team, 2 hours 40 minutes for the mixed team, and 3 hours 11 minutes for the women’s team. Each of the four members of the team will be repeating a 2,000-metre piece at least five times during the marathon piece.
The MAD team is also going for the 50,000-metre relay record which allows a rotation of 10 people.
