Olympic Solidarity Coaching Seminar Held in Singapore

The Singapore Amateur Rowing Association (SARA) and Singapore National Olympic Committee held a Technical Course for rowing coaches under the Olympic Solidarity Programme last week. The six-day course, which was held at the Association’s Pandan Reservoir Training Centre, was conducted by FISA Development Consultant Mr. Chris Perry and attracted twenty local participants. Topics covered included rowing technique and analysis, basic rowing physiology, training methodology and design of training plans, practical rigging and adjustment of equipment.
Many of those who attended the course are already involved in coaching at various levels in Singapore – some working with the National Team and junior squads, whilst others run weekly “Learn to Row” and school programmes. For the top athletes, attention is now focused on the South East Asian Games, which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam next December and it is hoped that some of the material offered will assist coaches to plan and prepare effectively for this event – as well as for the Asian Olympic Qualification Regatta in 2004.
SARA President Nicholas Ee, who organized the course, was pleased with the progress being achieved. “We ran a similar course about one year ago, but this time the level of understanding amongst the coaches was much better – especially on rowing technique. They have a better picture of what rowing is all about now and I hope they will put it to good use out on the water.”
