Pia Vogel Takes Break from International Rowing Scene
Two-time world champion Pia Vogel of Switzerland is taking a break from the International regatta scene this year a Swiss Rowing Federation official confirmed today.
The 2001 lightweight single sculls bronze medallist is said to have decided to stay out of all International competitions during the 2002 season.
Vogel, who was two-time world champion in the lightweight women’s single sculls in 1998 and 1999 is said to have achieved what there is to achieve as a single sculler.
The 32-year-old’s new motivation is to win an Olympic medal, and she is hoping to win a place in the lightweight women’s double sculls in order to be part of the Swiss contingent that will head to Athens in 2004. The athlete already has an Olympic 5th place under her belt from Sydney in 2000.
For the time being, Vogel will be continuing her training, and will compete at a National level in the single and in team crews with new recruits from her club.
The final decision on the Swiss athlete’s plans for 2003 will fall during the course of this year.
