The final of a series of three events making up the Sobieski Ergometer Cup of Poland was held yesterday (15 December) in the Polish capital of Warsaw.
An international field of athletes took part in one day of erg-racing and competed in one of five different events – the women’s and men’s lightweight single and the women’s and men’s single raced over 2000 metres as well as a VIP race over 500 m.
A handful of top international athletes participated in this VIP event. Among them, winner Wojciech
Jankowski from Poland – Barcelona bronze medallist in the coxed four. Thomas Lange from Germany and Estonian Olympian Yuri Jansson also took part in this very special race.
Sydney gold medallist and 2002 world silver medallist Iztok Cop from Slovenia chose not to row in the short VIP race, but rather to compete in the standard 2000 metre men’s single race. He was rewarded by victory – beating current world record holder Maciej (Matthias) Siejkowski by five hundredths of a second in 5.51.7 and also achieving his personal best.
The final was the last of a series of three qualifying rounds, which took place throughout the country in November.
The event was broadcast on Polish Radio and TV.
