Brush up on your Spanish. Learn your country’s chant. Exchange some Euros and head for the south of Spain. The FISA World Rowing Championships are in Seville from the 15th of September and the city is preparing for the onslaught of lycra clad, fit rowing bodies from 45 nations.
Most countries have determined their national teams, but with the final entry by name due on September 1, there is still possibility for small changes. The United States is boating the largest number of rowers with a crew in all of the 24 events. World Cup overall winners, Germany, are next with entries in 22 events.

The lightweight men’s double and lightweight women’s single feature the largest number of entries and highlight the increased participation by new rowing countries, especially from Latin American and African nations. The lightweight women’s single also sees the biggest increase in entries from 12 participants in 2001 to 22 this year.
Many of the crews are already in training centres throughout Europe for final preparation and acclimating purposes. This is especially important for southern hemisphere countries emerging from winter training. A development camp is currently underway in Banyoles, Spain, for the benefit of South American countries and a number of crews are in altitude training including Germany and Australia’s women.
