Raslanas elected to UNESCO sports committee

The chair of FISA’s youth rowing commission, Mr Algirdas Raslanas has been elected to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS).
This committee began in 1979 with the objective of introducing new, more flexible and cost-effective methods for spreading knowledge on physical education and sport. The aim is to allow for wider participation globally. |

Raslanas stated that the work of the committee will not have any influence on his work for FISA and he reiterated that he will continue his work with the youth commission, for which he has been the chair since 2002.
As well as his work in rowing Raslanas is the Director General of the Department of Physical Education and Sports under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. This makes him the highest public official in the field of physical education and sport in Lithuania. He is also the vice-president of the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee.
The term of service on UNESCO’s committee is for four years finishing in 2010. The meetings of the committee will take place every two years with the first meeting to be held at the end of this month, from 29 – 31 January 2008, in Paris.
Raslanas was a former competitive rower in Lithuania and he still holds the position of vice-president of the Lithuanian Rowing Federation. He has a PhD in social sciences and since 2001 Raslanas has published more than 80 scientific articles relating to the management of high level athletes’ training. In 2005 Raslanas was awarded the Cross of Officer of Merits to Lithuania.
