Rowing through World Environment Day
June 5 marks World Environment Day. Environmental issues in relation to sport have increased in recent years and rowing has moved with this increase.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was one of the first large sporting organisations to acknowledge the impact that sport can have on the environment. The interaction between sport and the environment has become the “third pillar” of the Olympic Movement (along with sport and culture). This means there is a commitment to ensuring a sustainable environment for tomorrow’s athletes and fans.
Last week, at the second Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland the local regatta organisers followed the “Ecosport” initiative. This is an initiative for Swiss sporting events to show respect for the environment.
President of the Lucerne organising committee, Urs Hunkeler is happy how the Rowing World Cup fared with Ecosport.
“Rowing on the Rotsee surrounded by this amazing scenery really means that we need to show our respect to this nature,” said Hunkeler. Rowing World Lucerne will keep continuing this initiative. “We will analyse this World Cup and then we will see what else we can improve and do better. I am sure there is still more potential in it.”
