Rowing World Cup Goes to Poland in 2004

The Malta International Regatta Course in Poznan, Poland has been chosen as the site for the first of the three Rowing World Cup regattas in 2004.

The announcement was made at a press conference in Poznan by Poznan’s Deputy Mayor Maciej Frankiewicz and FISA Executive Director FISA Matt Smith who was there as part of an inspection visit in relation to Poznan’s bid to host the 2007 World Rowing Championships.

Slated for May 7 to 9, 2004, the Poznan Rowing World Cup will be followed by Rowing World Cup regattas in Munich, Germany from May 28 to 30 and Lucerne, Switzerland from June 18 to 20. The 2004 international season culminates with the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

The Malta rowing course, an artificial reservoir that was created when the Cybina river was dammed, is situated on the right bank of the Warta river which flows through the city of Poznan. The course has already been the stage for several high calibre rowing events including the 1995 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships and the World University Rowing Championships in 2000. The same year the course underwent extensive renovation in preparation for the 2001 World Canoeing Championships which included the construction of a new press centre, accreditation building and the renovation of
