Gozzi racing in 2007 at Bogliasco

The fixed seat rowing Gozzi European Cup is preparing for its second year. To be held 5 July in Bogliasco, Genoa, Italy, the race is expecting entries from throughout Europe.

Races are 1km long on Bogliasco Bay with good spectator visibility from the beach. It begins with qualification races at 4.30pm followed by the semifinals and the final at 9pm. Last year over 2,000 people watched the races. The 1km sprint involves an exciting mass start, a turn around a buoy and a final sprint to the finish. With the final starting at 9pm, added excitement for the racers will come from rowing in darkness. Only the lights from the small tourist town of Bogliasco will help visibility.

Competitors will race in “gozzi” boats supplied by the organising committee. These boats are the traditional fishing craft of the Ligurian region. Four rowers and one coxswain race in these 5.6m, 95kg boats.

Last year competitors came to Bogliasco from Ireland, England, France and Slovenia. The final result had the Italian National Team winning the European Cup, followed by St Patrick, Ireland, in second and Genoa, Italy in third.

Entries are due in by 25 June and more information can be found here.
