The 16th edition of the traditional international regatta “Memorial Paolo d’Aloja” takes place this weekend at lake Piediluco (Italy’s largest rowing training centre) in Italy.

204 athletes from seven countries will take part in this rowing classic, which features nine open categories and five lightweight categories. Six Croatian crews, one Israeli crew, 58 Italian crews, three Yugoslavian crews and seven Mexican crews have been entered together with eight Czech boats and four crews from Tunisia.

The event is named after former Italian Federation president Paolo d’Aloja, who played a large role in the development of rowing in Italy in the eighties. He was behind the creation of the country’s first national training centre in Piediluco, resulting in the win of the Abbagnale brothers in the men’s coxed pair at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles – the first Gold medal for Italy after years of poor results.

The regatta, raced over two half days on Saturday morning and Sunday morning, will be televised on RAI live on Saturday morning from 9.30 to 11.30 am and retransmitted on Saturday afternoon between 4.35 and 5.05 pm. and on Sunday from 3 to 4 pm.
