Pick any corner of the world and it’s likely you won’t be too far from a rowing regatta. Pick Concepcion, Chile and last weekend you would have seen masters rowers from across South America competing at the 10th South American Masters Championships.
There may not have been loads of spectators but the competitors themselves, coming from a total of 26 clubs, made the regatta festive and competitive.
The overall points cup, The South American Masters Cup, was won by Stadio Italiano from Concepcion with Gremio Nautico Uniao of Porto Alegre, Brazil finishing second.
Oldest competitor, 71 year old Carlos Meynardi finished second in the masters eight with his Santa Fe club and was one of the 200 rowers who came out in the autumn conditions to row as fast as they could for 1,000 metres.
Next year the championship will move to Porto Alegre, Brazil to be hosted by the Gremio Nautico Uniao Club to coincide with the club’s 100th birthday celebrations.
The World Rowing team values feedback.
