Germany’s top men’s eight secured the SpeedRows trophy for 2004 when they raced last weekend in Hamburg, Germany. Over the 400 metre course the German Olympic crew kept ahead of sprint specialists from Heidelberg, Germany to win by half a boat length.
In this one-on-one knock out style regatta, Germany did not get a chance to take on Olympic silver medallists, the Netherlands, as the Dutch were defeated in the semi-final against Heidelberg.

In the women’s eight Germany’s Olympic boat showed its skills to a 10,000 spectator strong crowd who came out to see the Olympic rowers. However they had very little competition with the main challenge coming from Hamburg RG Hansa. The attempt by Hansa went down well with the audience.
The women’s single final came down to a duel between Olympic gold medallist in the quad, Meike Evers, and defending junior champion Julie Heitmann – both from Germany. Evers came out on top.
This is the second year that the SpeedRows have been raced and the 10,000 strong crowd defied coldness and construction work to watch the excitement. The main races were broadcast live to 54 countries.
