US and Germany sprint for the cure

When the United States lined their women’s eight up against Germany’s eight, at the BearingPoint Rowing World Cup in Munich, Germany, they were racing for more than just being the fastest boat.

They had already raced earlier in the day in the final of the eight and the two crews came back on the water for the shorter 500-metre, sprint to raise awareness and money for breast cancer in Germany through the Komen Germany.

Throughout the day people at the Munich regatta course could buy tickets that would put them into a lottery with the winner drawn later that day. Evelyn Unholzer of Munich had her name drawn. Unholzer, who came to the regatta course as a spectator correctly guessed that the United States would win the sprint, putting her into the draw. She wins a trip to Lucerne, Switzerland including VIP tickets to the final day at the BearingPoint Rowing World Cup.

BearingPoint has promised to double the amount raised by the lottery and the full amount will be handed over to Komen Germany at the annual German Sports Press Ball. Held at the end of October in Frankfurt, Germany’s famed long jumper and sprinter Heike Drechsler will present the cheque to Komen Germany.
Germany currently has the highest death-rate in Europe from breast cancer thought to be due to the late detection of the disease.
