Tomkins and Ginn Back to Winning Ways
After being reunited late last year, the Australian 1999 world champion coxless pair, James Tomkins and Drew Ginn, are back to their winning ways with their return to competition at the Victorian State Championships last week.
The successful duo was forced to split at Lucerne in 2000, when Ginn suffered a back injury which subsequently put him out of contention for the Sydney Olympics. Despite their time out of the boat the combination were able to show that they still have what it takes to win with their victory in the pair.
Tomkins and Ginn battled a class field in the event which included Matt Long, Tomkins’ pair partner and fellow bronze medallist from the 2000 Olympic Games and several members from the Australian eight that competed at the 2001 World Championships.
Tomkins and Ginn were also both members of the Mercantile Rowing Club crew which took victory in the men’s eight over the Melbourne University crew by just ‘10 centimetres.
The pair were also a part of a star studded crew which took out the coxless four along with Anthony Edwards, Olympic silver medallist from the lightweight four and David Crawshay, who was a member of the Australian quad scull at the 2001 world championships.
The Australian National Rowing Championships take place from March 4-10 on Nagambie Lakes in Victoria.
