The United States took another step towards deciding their 2002 World Championship Team with the second of two selection regattas held last weekend at Princeton, New Jersey. The crews that qualified will compete at the second Zurich Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland in July.

Athletes from the Princeton Training Centre dominated the winning boats and the biggest field was in the men’s double with 28 entries.

Selection was made in the following events:

– Women’s double sculls – Laurel Korholz and Kelly Salchow
– Men’s double sculls – Wyatt Allen and Dan Protz
– Men’s pair – Bryan Volpenhein and Jason Read
– Women’s pair – Portia Johnson and Megan Dirkmaat
– Men’s lightweight double – Conal Groom and Stephan Arthur-Wong
Women’s lightweight double – Mary Obidinski and Stacey Borgman

The selection pressure on these athletes, however, will continue. Their next step in the process is to place in the top six in Lucerne and also to meet the designated time standard at the National Team Time Standard Regatta on August 14. Only then will the crew qualify to represent the United States at the World Championships to be held in Seville, Spain in September.

For all other boat classes and for the above crews that do not make the top six in Lucerne, further selections for the World Championships will take place at the 2002 National Team Trials to be held August 7 ? 12 in Princeton, New Jersey.
