US Trials Results
A new-look US rowing squad is to appear at the FISA World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland in August, with just a handful of 2000 Olympians appearing in the team selected at US trials yesterday.
Most of the squad has been named but the men’s single scull and the men’s coxed pair will face their final trial race on Monday (US time).
The trials are mainly for the small boats and do not include the men’s coxless four and the men’s eights which are selected by coaches.
Some of the familiar names gracing the 2001 squad include 1999 lightweight single sculls silver medallist Lisa Schlenker and former men’s eight world champion Bryan Volpenheim (who will row in the coxless pair with Erik Winters).
The 2000 lightweight men’s double Olympian Steve Tucker makes a return in 2001, this time in the lightweight single but trials racing is not over for him. He will meet Tim Whitney today to see who will row in the heavyweight men’s category.
Jennifer Devine earns her first national team spot since she rowed in the double sculls at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She will row in the women’s single sculls.
Princeton Zurich Rowing World Cup silver medallists Mary Obindinski and Catherine Humblet were the clear winners of the lightweight women’s double sculls trials.
Under the US trials system, crews race each other over 2-3 days of finals, with the winner of each boat class becoming the US crew for that year.
