Germany continued to show their rowing dominance by winning World Cup points in every Olympic event in Lucerne, Switzerland yesterday. After two World Cup events they now lead by nearly double their nearest challenger, Great Britain. The Germans won gold in four races and had crews in every final of the 14 events.
The order has remained reasonably consistent since the first World Cup in Hazewinkel last month. The Czech Republic has taken France’s place in the number four spot and Great Britain and Italy retain their second and third positions respectively. However, only one point separates these nations. The rest of the top ten countries are breathing down each other’s back. All it will take is a slight change in race outcome for an order reshuffle.
The United States, Australia and Canada made their 2002 World Cup debut at Lucerne and showed their rowing strength by slipping into the top twenty on the points table. USA moved into fourteenth position boosted by a win in the men’s eight and a bronze in the women’s quad.
The World Cup, in its present format, is still relatively new. Created in 1997, it awards points for crews placing first through to seventh in Olympic events, at each of the World Cup regattas. The points leader in each event also gets to wear the yellow leader ?jersey’, signifying their status.
Germany will take 142 points into the final World Cup on their home turf in Munich next month. Great Britain follows with 75 points and Italy with 74.
