World Champion rowers make their wish cont...
What do you wish for when you are already a World Champion? One thing is for sure, there is no slowing down. Spend time over the festive season to read below and find out what our current World Champions wish for the coming year, the event they are most looking forward to and what they plan for Christmas Day.
Jan Tebruegge (GER M8+)
“The top rowing event in 2007 for me is also on top of my personal wish list: the World Rowing Championships in Munich. It is my goal to defend the World Championship title. With that goal attained, it is another step on the way to Beijing, which is my overall goal. First off, we would qualify for the Olympics and secondly my chances to compete at the Olympics would improve.”
Thorsten Engelmann (GER M8+)
“The top of my wish list for 2007 is to win the Boat Race at April 7th for Cambridge. Last year’s experience of losing the Boat Race with really nasty conditions made me even more eager to train harder and to be better than Oxford.
I’m most looking forward to two events. One is the Boat Race, because I haven’t won it yet, and the other event is the World Championship in Munich, in my home country. We want to defend the world title amongst our friends and families.”
Susan Francia (USA W8+)
“A new Mercedes-Benz SLK. I’m most looking forward to the women’s eight at Worlds.”
Anna Goodale (USA W8+)
“At the top of my wish list for 2007 is bringing home the gold, not only for us in the women’s 8+ but all across the board. I am looking forward to all events but of course the World Championship is what we train for so that is what I am looking forward to the most!”
Anna Mickelson (USA W8+)
“I look forward to Worlds and qualifying for the Olympics and I wish for no worries in 2007.”
Caroline Lind (USA W8+)
“The top of my wish list for 2007 is to get even faster as a team and repeat in the eight and win more medals throughout our team. I am most looking forward to the World Championships because this is the biggest event of the year and I hope we can make a positive showing.”
Mary Whipple (USA W8+)
"The top of my wish list for 2007 is for my team to enjoy the process toward the Olympic Qualifying year and to not let all the nitty gritty get in the way of becoming a fast crew. Of course the race I am looking forward to is the World Championships because that is when all the boats are at their peak speed and we all go head to head. Henley would also be great to race again because of the unique atmosphere of the venue. Henley reminds me of why racing is fun."
Angela Madsen (USA TA2x)
“My wish for 2007: I would like to remain healthy and at the top of my game. I would also like to be able to get some more rowing equipment and boats for our adaptive rowing program (California Adaptive Rowing Program).
The event I am most looking forward to in 2007 is the Atlantic Crossing. The World Championships in Munich are important to me also but I have an itch that I have not yet been able to scratch. I trained all last year to row across the Atlantic in 2006 but had to postpone and revise a new plan for 2007. My goal is to become the first (disabled) differently-abled female to row across the Atlantic (www.rowoflife.net).”
Scott Brown (USA TA2x)
“The very top of my wish list are a shiny new pair of oars from Concept2 and a new fixed seat from WinTech Racing. I can use it on the erg as well as the boat. Since this is a wish list, a Bugatti Veyron would be nice as would 100 pounds of 100 dollar bills and of course, I’d like to double my Vo2 max.
Without a doubt, I am looking forward to the 2007 World Championships. This is the ultimate race. It can be just as intense as the Olympics/Paralympics. The competition is fierce and the stakes are high. It has the potential to be very rewarding but can also be devastating. Either way, there is nothing like going up against the best rowers that the world has to offer.”
Jovan Popovic (SRB M2+)
“At the top of my wish for 2007 is to be in the first 11 {at the World Championships} and to secure my place for the Olympic Games. I would like to row in the men’s four because the four is the best boat to row. I hope that next year I will have a chance to answer these questions again!”
