Olaf Tufte and Nils Torolv Simonsen set a new world record for 100,000 m over the weekend, crushing the previous record by almost 14 minutes. The new world record is 5 hours, 39 minutes and 24.5 seconds.

The world record attempt took place in a shopping centre in Olaf Tufte’s hometown of Horten, Norway.  Tufte and Simonsen used the new model ?d? indoor rowing ergometer.  They rowed 10 x 5,000m each. Both started off in what the athletes described as a ?calm start?, rowing at an average pace of 1:43 – 1:44 / 500 meters, both however finished at a terrific pace with average times less than 1:40 / 500 meters.

Nils Torolv Simonsen first 5,000m : 17:17.7

The event was a fundraiser for a Norwegian charity ?Mot?, and the goal was to collect 1 NOK for every meter rowed. That goal is still to be met, but by the time they had finished they had raised 40,000 NOK.

The world record attempt was controlled by the local police and International Umpire, Grete Isachsen Stokke.
