Rowing – Munich, Germany to stage the first regatta of the 2008 Rowing World Cup series
The event will be held on the Olympic Regatta Course in Oberschleissheim, near Munich from 9 to 11 May 2008. Two candidates were in the running to organise this event: The Idroscalo regatta course in Milan, Italy and Munich. Munich will be the site of the 2007 World Rowing Championships in August 2007.
“We are very proud to be able to host another Rowing World Cup regatta on our course in Munich” said Bernd Schuhmacher, Chairman of the Munich Regatta Association. “It is very important for us to utilise the new and renovated infrastructure provided by the World Championships in the future.” The Munich Olympic Regatta Course was built for the 1972 Olympic Games and provides excellent facilities.
“We are always very well served by the Munich organising committee. Over the years, they have acquired valuable experience in organising major International Regattas with these incredible permanent facilities,” said Matt Smith, Executive Director of FISA.
The Rowing World Cup series was launched back in 1997 and includes all 14 Olympic boat classes. The overall Rowing World Cup champions are determined after a series of three regattas. The venues and dates of the 2008 Rowing World Cup series are:
Rowing World Cup I – Munich, Germany from 9 to 11 May 2008
Rowing World Cup II – Poznan, Poland from 30 May to 1 June 2008
