Adaptive rowers make a second bid for the finals
Adaptive rowers continue to make their bid for the podium and Paralympic qualifications spots at the World Rowing Championships with repechage races in four boat classes. | |
Start of the arms women's single heat |
The arms women’s single (AW1x) saw a return to domination for 2006 World Champion Helene Raynsford of Great Britain after finishing fourth in yesterday’s heat. With her strong feathered strokes, Raynsford beat Poland’s Martyna Snopek by over five seconds and both advance to the final. Repechage two included a rare nail biter for second place behind winner Ukraine’s Svitlana Kurpiianova. USA’s Laura Schwanger overtook early race leader Joan Reid of Canada. The duo continued to battle it out in the final 250 metres with Schwanger securing her spot to the final by just 0.74 seconds.
ZHANG Jinhong (CHN): "It was a good race, I enjoyed it."
Three spots in both repechages for the arms men’s single (AM1x) saw advancement to the semifinals from repechage one for China’s Yeteng Tan, Hungary's Tibor Serenyi and Germany’s Daniel Sturm. This finishing order was set up from the start of the race and continued to the line like a procession with boats spread by open water. The second repechage featured Italy’s Simone Miramonti who showed his boat speed in the heats but was beaten by more experienced athletes. Today Miramonti led from start to finish over the 1000m course with Brazil’s Moacir Rauber, and Spain’s Luis Miguel Castro Carmona qualifying from second and third respectively.
SERENYI Tibor (HUN): "I feel really good now. I`m satisfied, and now it became a real aim to get to the top 8."
In the trunk and arms double sculls (TA2x) two repechages required a top three finish to advance to the semifinal and keep their Paralympic qualification hopes alive. In repechage one Great Britain had a clear win beating nearest threat, Canada, by over 12 seconds. Canada and Israel's husband and wife duo of Igor and Mary Kogan advance to the semifinal, Canada from second after overtaking Israel in the last 50m. Poland's Piotr Majka and Jolanta Pawlak were clear winners in repechage two. The duo finished second last year and will be strong contenders in the semifinal. They led the repechage from start to finish. Ukraine was a steady second place throughout the race. Hong Kong was overtaken by Belarus just after the halfway point. A strong rally in the final 250 meters and it looked like they might catch Belarus back, but timing struggles with Shuk Fan Chan in bow kept them out of the semifinals. Hong Kong will have to race in the C Final.
The Germans finished with an overwhelming 39 second lead in the legs, trunk and arms mixed coxed four (LTAMx4+) to advance along with China and Japan, in second and third respectively.
LACKNER Susanne (GER): "Well, it is nice to row here. It`s my first experience, and it`s absolutely positive."
KLEMP Marcus (GER): "The last race, it was quite easy."
Adaptive semifinals take place on Thursday.
