Nominations for the award can be submitted by the general public and the media on the World Rowing website.

The Thomas Keller Medal, named after FISA’s long serving former President, was first awarded in 1990. The award will be presented this year on 26 May 2012 at the 2012 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. It is presented by Dominik Keller, the son of Thomas Keller and Denis Oswald, president of FISA.

The winner of the Thomas Keller Medal receives an 18 carat gold medal along with a lifetime accreditation to all FISA World Rowing Championships.

In 2011, Estonia’s Jueri Jaanson won the award after a rowing career that spanned more than two decades during which he won Olympic and World Championship medals – Jaanson retired at the age of 44. Previous winners include James Tomkins (Australia), Kathrin Boron (Germany), Elisabeta Lipa (Romania), Steve Redgrave (Great Britain), Marnie McBean (Canada), among others. To be awarded the Thomas Keller Medal, the following five factors are taken into consideration:

1. Success at the international level
2. “Type” of career
3. Technical mastery of the sport
4. Sportsmanship
5. “Legendary” aspect

In principle only one medal can be awarded in any one year.
