Oswald to stand for IOC Presidency
The election will be held at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires on 10 September 2013.
“With Denis Oswald as President, international rowing has been transformed,” said Executive Director Matt Smith. “The breadth of his experience and knowledge of international sport as both Olympic athlete and administrator is unique and FISA is proud to support him as a candidate to be the next President of the International Olympic Committee.“
Oswald has an outstanding record as athlete, lawyer and international sports leader. He participated in three Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in the Mexico Games of 1968, during his long international rowing career.
His academic credentials include a doctorate in law from the University of Neuchatel in French, and studies in law at the University of Zurich in German and at Cambridge University in English, leading to a distinguished career as a lawyer and later as a professor of law.
In international sport, Oswald has led FISA as President for 24 years, following 12 years as Secretary General. Elected to the IOC in 1991, he has a deep understanding of the core business of the IOC – staging a successful Olympic Games – by leading the IOC Coordination Commission through the many challenges of delivering Athens 2004 and the highly successful London 2012 Olympic Games.
The international sports world has elected Oswald to many other positions, including three terms as President of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and three terms on the IOC Executive Board.
