Mexico strong at Club Spain regatta
The regatta brings together the biggest rowing clubs in Mexico and some of the biggest clubs from the South American continent. Incorporated into the regatta this year was the Pan-American Youth Regatta and the Ibero-American Under-23 Regatta.
The regatta attracted nations from the Caribbean, Central America and South America with nearly 500 rowers taking part.
Points scored from the finals saw Club Spain, Mexico become the overall winner. Club Spain also won the Corona Cup for the 500m dash race which took place at the end of the racing programme.
“The dash race always arouses great expectations and great interest because the races are always defined by a photo finish, especially in the eights,” says coach Osvaldo Borchi.
Club Spain organises the event with the support of the Mexican Rowing Federation and they provide all foreign participants with free accommodation, food and boats. This, says Borchi, is fundamental in ensuring the participation of the best rowers in the region.
Mexico topped the overall medals table with Peru in second and El Salvador in third.
